Abstract

The use of electronic cigarettes among young adults has increased significantly in recent years and has begun to raise various public health concerns, particularly related to respiratory disorders. This study aims to analyze the relationship between electronic cigarette use and mild respiratory disorders among students at private universities in Surabaya. The research employed a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design. Data were collected through questionnaires distributed to 120 student electronic cigarette users selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data analysis was conducted using the chi-square test to determine the relationship between the intensity of electronic cigarette use and the occurrence of mild respiratory symptoms. The findings revealed a significant relationship between electronic cigarette use and mild respiratory disorders, indicated by symptoms such as mild coughing, throat irritation, mild shortness of breath, and wheezing. This study argues that electronic cigarettes are not entirely safe as commonly perceived by university students. The findings provide empirical contributions to public health studies regarding the impact of electronic cigarettes on young adults and may serve as a basis for strengthening health education and preventive policies within higher education environments.
